An increasing number of agencies, particularly those involved with the supervision of vulnerable persons which include children, disadvantaged or the elderly, are seeking assistance of the police agencies in the Province of Ontario to provide a level of security clearance for new employees and volunteers.
In early 1995, the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services issued a policy regarding the
screening of volunteers and employees providing direct service to, or in direct contact with, vulnerable persons. This policy requires that criminal reference checks are to be conducted on agency volunteers and employees, when these individuals provide direct services to vulnerable persons in the course of which they have unsupervised access to these clients. Volunteer centres serve individuals seeking volunteer placements and the agencies that engage them.

The Brockville Police Service has deemed that the most appropriate police record check should be provided by the police service where the applicant resides. When required for employment, Visas or Pardon Requests, a criminal record check will cost $35.00. As of March 29, 1999 applicants who wish a volunteer check must pay $10.00. You must provide the name of the agency you are volunteering with. The Brockville Police Service will also serve out of town residents, however you are encouraged to attend the police service of your area of residence. Two forms of valid identification will be required, preferably a birth certificate and a driver's license, when you hand in the Consent to Disclosure of Criminal Record form, and payment must be made in advance. Payment may be cash or Interac. No personal cheques will be accepted.
An applicant will complete the required form, which will be processed and left at the front desk of the Brockville police station to be picked up. In most instances, the police record check form will be completed within three - five working days.
