The concept of Smiles for Life derived from the United States. It was designed to provide some funding to community cancer research. In Ontario, many communities have adopted Smiles for Life to help fund Camp Trillium, which is a childhood cancer support centre.
Every year in Ontario, over four hundred children are diagnosed with cancer. For most of these kids, cancer is a long haul, and the thought of being able to get away on a camping trip seems like an even more remote opportunity.
Camp Trillium was established in 1984 to provide a camp environment for children with cancer and their families. Camp Trillium allows these kids to go to camp and be with other children and try to forget about cancer for a while.
Each year between the months of March and May Dr. Culp and Dr. Keeling from the Boardwalk Medical Centre in downtown Brockville donate a large portion of the cost of their teeth whitening process to Camp Trillium in their Smiles for Life campaign. Boardwalk Medical Centre is proud to be Eastern Ontario's headquarters for the International Smiles for Life Campaign.
