Twelve Criminal Code charges were laid for various criminal offences including 3 impaired driving charges. Officers investigated 19 motor vehicle collisions during this time period with no serious injuries reported. Holiday safety tips: Toys and gifts • Toys that contain small parts are dangerous to children younger than age 3. Most toys have an age recommendation on the package. Choose toys suitable to your child's age and follow all instructions. • Make sure toys that are purchased for older children will not be dangerous to the baby. Even if the older child is responsible, a chemistry set, for example, could be hazardous to a younger child. As well toys for older children often have smaller parts, which could easily be swallowed by a baby or toddler. • Toys with magnetic pieces should be kept away from children under 6 years of age. The magnets are easily swallowed, and can cause bowel obstruction and perforation. Children up to 11 years of age have needed surgery for these complications. If magnetic pieces are swallowed, the child should be x-rayed. • Dispose of all gift-wrapping (bags, paper, ribbons, bows and packaging) as they can put a small child at risk of suffocation or choking. • Use caution with battery-operated toys. Only adults should change batteries; use either rechargeable or disposable batteries – never mix the two types; toys where children can easily access batteries are not safe; and children should not take battery operated toys to bed. • Make sure that any toys are not on the health Canada recall list by visiting their website at http://healthycanadians.gc.ca/pr-rp e.php. Drinking and Driving • Every year drinking and driving claims lives. Always make sure that you and your guests have a designated driver, take a cab or use public transportation. Remember that all passengers need to be buckled up.

Weekly Police Report
During the week ending October 1, 2007 members of the Brockville Police Service attended to a total of 238 incidents. Twenty-three Criminal Code charges were laid for various Criminal Code offences. Fifty charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act. During the period from Thursday, September 27 to Monday, October 1st there were a total of 21 arrests made under the Criminal Code and the Liquor Licence Act. On September 29th officers attended to a disturbance at a residence on James Street where a 33 year old male was stabbed in the face by a male person. The victim was taken to the Brockville General Hospital where he received 50 stitches to his face area and released. Our investigation continues. Since January 1, 2007 to this date officers have attended 790 9-1-1 calls. The 9-1-1 phone system links emergency services to persons in need in a matter of moments. When a 9-1-1 call is made, the caller's information and address is immediately made available to the emergency service. This system links people in need to an emergency service. It is a system that works very well. Every week police receive many 9-1-1 calls. Many of these calls are from cellular phones. Some owners of the cell phone have 9-1-1 built into a speed dial function on the phone. As the phones are carried around sometimes the 9-1-1 feature is accidentally activated and police are contacted. These calls are followed up by police calling back the cell phone number and checking to make sure the caller is not in distress. All of this takes up valuable time and resources of the emergency service. Most times these calls are made unintentionally. If your home phone or your cell phone has a speed dial feature for 9-1-1, it would be wise to disable that feature. Dialing 9-1-1 only requires the use of 3 numbers and is a simple call to make. The use of the speed dial feature for such a simple call is not practicable and the speed dial feature results in police fielding un-intended calls to the 9-1-1 emergency lines.

Press Release
On the 14th of August, the Brockville Police Service will be using a new red and blue emergency lighting system which will be installed on all front line cruisers. This lighting configuration is different from the traditional red only lights to both red on the driver’s side and blue on the passenger side of the cruiser. Research has indicated that blue lights are a much more conspicuous colour of light in both day and night time use. The study shows a substantial reduction in the number of emergency police vehicles involved in collisions while stopped on the road side. The Highway Traffic Act states that, “upon approaching an emergency vehicle with its lamp producing intermittent flashes of red light or red and blue light that is stopped on a highway, the driver of a vehicle traveling on the same side of the highway shall slow down and proceed with caution, having due regard for traffic on and the conditions of the highway and the weather, to ensure that the driver does not collide with the emergency vehicle or endanger any person outside of the emergency vehicle.” Section 159.1(1) H.T.A. the “blue light initiative” was spearheaded by Peel Regional Police, and has gained the unanimous support of such organizations as the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, the Ontario Association of Chief’s of Police, the Chief Coroner’s Office and the Police Association of Ontario.
