Spring Safety Message
Once again the bicycles, roller blades, and skateboards are appearing back on our streets and sidewalks. The Brockville Police Service would like to take this opportunity to inform the public to be on the lookout for the cyclists that are using the roadway. Cyclists should at all times wear an approved helmet. It is a known fact that helmets save lives and serious injuries when worn properly by cyclists. Just recently a tragedy occurred in Pickering when a 15 year old youth was being towed on roller blades behind a car. This youth fell, was run over by a car, suffered severe head injuries and later died.
We would like everyone to obey the traffic rules and to have a watchful eye for skateboarders, roller bladers, and cyclists throughout our community. We are asking motorists to please slow down when passing cyclists. Last summer we had numerous complaints from cyclists who were forced off the road by motorists that would not yield to them while passing
We would also like to advise cyclists to be very careful due to the potholes and damage on the roadways this time of year.
Please remember the four Community Safety Zones at area schools which have maximum speed limits of 40 km/hour and possible double fines and loss of demerit points.
- Parkedale Avenue and Windsor Drive at Thousand Islands Secondary School
- Central Avenue at St. Mary's High School and Westminster Public School.
- Pearl Street East at Commonwealth Public School, Brockville General Hospital and Brockville Collegiate Institute
- Brock Street at Prince of Wales Public School
Once again lets keep our children safe and slow down in the Community Safety Zones and around cyclists, roller bladers and skateboarders. We can all do our part in keeping Brockville one of the safest communities in Canada.
