disabilities are targeted more. Here are some helpful hints to improve personal safety.

  • Use only initials and surnames on mailboxes, directory, etc.
  • Never open doors to strangers who do not provide proper identification.
  • Do not display large amounts of money in public or keep it in the home.
  • Don't leave keys in obvious places.
  • Walk on well-lit streets.
  • When in public, be aware of your surroundings.

On average, a residential burglary occurs in Canada every 90 seconds. Simple low-cost methods, such as making sure doors and windows are shut and locked can deter many would-be thieves.

  • Install a peep hole.
  • Keep blinds closed to deter peeping toms.
  • Do not hang lingerie outdoors.
  • Make sure your answering machine message does not indicate that you are home alone.
  • Keep records of valuables and property (a) brands; (b) serial and model numbers; and c) identifying features.
  • Dead bolt locks are more secure.
  • Use lexan glass.
  • Install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.

Parents: Children are the building blocks for tomorrow's society. We must protect them. Abuse of children is more likely by someone known to them. Foster a positive relationship with them so that they won't be afraid to discuss problems and issues with you. Discuss with them these helpful reminders:

  • Do not permit anyone to touch areas of their body a swimsuit wouldn't cover.
  • To tell you where they are at all times.
  • Tell them where they can reach you at all times.
  • To identify signs and logos of organizations dedicated to helping.
  • If at home alone not to answer the door, or if on the phone, not to say they are alone.
  • Don't approach or enter a stranger's vehicle, and not to hitch hike.
  • Call 911 in an emergency for police, fire or ambulance.

Motor vehicles are an integral part in our society. These suggestions will help protect you and make your vehicle safer:

  • Keep your vehicle well maintained.
  • Always check the interior/exterior of your car before entering.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • Don't drink and drive.
  • Park in well-lit areas with pedestrian travel.
  • Lock all doors when exiting or entering the car.
  • If your car breaks down lock all doors, put on 4-way flashers and display "Call Police" sign.
